Ballin’ on a Budget

Ballin’ on a budget, what exactly does it mean? According to Urban Dictionary, the ever so trustworthy source, ballin’ on a budget is, “the act of ballin’ whilst strapped for cash.” So, ballin’ on a budget sounds like a pretty solid plan if you ask me – you do fun things, and you are able to have a good time without actually really having any money! What more could you ask for? As a broke college student, the art of ballin’ on a budget is one that I like to think I’ve somewhat mastered. So please, allow this broke baller to impart some advice on how one can successfully ball on a budget.

Fake it til you make it

The first tip on how to ball on a budget, much like Fight Club, is not to talk about it. Sure, I’m breaking the cardinal rule right now, but it’s for the benefit of others, so I get a pass. The whole point of ballin’ on a budget is to make it seem like you have more money than you actually do, you kind of have to go with the ‘fake it til you make it’ mindset.

Do the math

My second, arguably more important tip, is to actually make a budget. It’s important, and very sobering, to see where your money is actually going every month. That $3 coffee you get on the way to work everyday might not seem like that big a deal, but it adds up. It’s fine if the $3 coffee is a priority for you, maybe it’s the one thing that makes you feel human in the morning, but it’s important to know exactly where your money is going.

DIY, baby!

Do it yourself. Seriously. Everything you love, all of those speciality items you buy at the grocery store? Take to Pinterest and try to make them yourself! Maybe invest in a coffee maker and make your own coffee at home, or take up baking and learn how to make that really killer Italian bread like the bakery has.

Get thrifty

This next tip has become much more popular within the last few years, but thrift stores, people! Thrift stores are the hidden gem that most people were sleeping on for some reason until a few years ago. Thrift stores are great places to go if you’re looking for some new clothes and don’t feel like spending an arm and a leg. Plus, for me at least, having to kind of search for the items makes it more fun!

Get a life

One thing that will make it seem like you have more money than you do, is to have a hobby. It always seems like rich people have at least one hobby, and that’s because they can afford to! I’m not telling you to take up the most expensive hobby you can think of, but maybe look into giving something a shot that you’ve always wanted to try.

World Wide Web!

My last tip is going to be to take advantage of the Internet. Want some new recipes made from cheap ingredients? Pinterest and Google know all. Want something fun to do on a Saturday that doesn’t involve spending money? Check out your community website for any festivals or free concerts! Want to learn something new? Duolingo is a personal favorite app/website for learning new languages. MIT’s OpenCourseWare has free online course material. With the Internet, the world is at your fingertips.

Ballin’ on a budget is certainly doable, and it’s something that a lot of people are having to do. There is no shame whatsoever in ballin’ on a budget. Take advantage of the free community days, and the cheaper matinee movie times. If you need me, i’ll be thumbing through the records at the thrift store, hope to see you there sometime.
